When young women women have finished going through puberty, and before they have children, the labia majora and labia minora are usually in line with the curves from the lower abdomen round underneath towards the anus and bottom at the back. Therefore when wearing knickers or bikini bottoms, there is usually no embarrassment from abnormal bulges or outline.
How the Vulva and Labia change
During puberty, some unfortunate women develop labia that are longer than normal. This can affect the labia majora or minora, or both.
Women who have normal labia after puberty, can often go on to get embarrassingly long labia either following childbirth or just as they get older.
As with all tissues in the body, as we age, the fat and connective tissue thins. This is the reason that our faces age and we start to see wrinkles on the skin around the eyes, forehead, nose and mouth.
These same changes also occur in the tissue of the labia, giving them a less "full" look and feel, allowing them to hang looser and longer.
Development of the Vulva - the Labial "lips" - Labia majora and minora:
When girls first reach puberty, the sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) make the vagina and the labia enlarge.
The vagina becomes deeper, preparing for sexual intercourse. The vulva also develop, enlarging and becoming softer and more cushioned, filling up with fat and connective tissue.
There are two different pairs of labial "lips" that make up the vulva.
The outer pair, called the "labia majora" or outer labial lips, are the folds of skin which usually have pubic hair growing from them.
The inner pair, called the "labia minora" or inner labial lips, are the mucosal folds (or moist pink lips) inside of these just before the entrance of the vagina.
