How the vulva and labia
change:
During puberty, some
unfortunate women develop labia that are longer than
normal. This can affect the labia majora or minora or
both.
Women who have normal labia after puberty, can often go on
to get embarrassingly long labia either following
childbirth or just as they get older.
As with all tissues in the body, as we age, the fat and
connective tissue thins. This is the reason that our faces
age and we start to see wrinkles on the skin around the
eyes, forehead, nose and mouth.
These same changes also
occur in the tissue of the labia, giving them a less
"full" look and feel, allowing them to hang looser and
longer.
Who needs vulvoplasty - "labial trimming":
There are rarely any
medical reasons for a vulvoplasty or labial trimming.
However there are many reasons why women may wish to
consider this procedure.
Enlarged or abnormally long vulva can obviously be very
embarrassing, particularly in intimate situations. This
can cause such psychological problems that it can prevent
women from having normal sexual relations and cause
irreversible damage to personal relationships.
Similarly, these anatomical changes can sometimes be
visible through pants or bikini bottoms, restricting
fashion or sporting activities such as swimming.
For many years nothing was readily available or really
known about by many of the public and women often suffered
in silence. However, thanks to a more enlightened press
and the internet, the vulvoplasty procedure became better
known - being commonly called the "designer vagina".
The vulvoplasty or "labial trimming" (designer vagina)
operation, allows gynaecologists to remove excess tissue
from the vulva, giving women the vulva that they want and
are more comfortable with.
